1890 – quatrième photochrome étonnant de qualité!

«C’est une petite pépite dans l’immensité du fonds photographique de la Library of Congress américaine» comme le dit “Le Temps”. Une série de près de 750 «photochromes» réalisés en Suisse entre 1890 et 1900. Inventé en 1880 et en Suisse, le procédé du photochrome permet de coloriser une image à partir d’un film négatif noir et blanc, par un système de plaques lithographiques, puis de colorisation à la main. De ces images tombées dans le domaine public, on ignore l’auteur. Prises entre 1890 et 1900, elles donnent à voir une Suisse idéalisée et bucolique, qu’affectionnaient notamment les touristes anglais.

“It’s a little nugget in the vastness of the photographic collection of the US Library of Congress” as “Le Temps” says. A series of nearly 750 “photochromic” pictures made in Switzerland between 1890 and 1900. Invented in 1880 in Switzerland, the photochromic process allows colorizing an image from a black and white negative film, by a system of lithographic plates and hand colorization. These images are now in the public domain (unknown author). Taken between 1890 and 1900, they give to see an idealized and bucolic Swiss image, liked by tourists, especialy the English ones.
